KSpread and xls
Is it possible for KSpread to save spreadsheets as excel files?
Can't see an option in the save format dropdown.

I don't think they can be saved that way, but check the export option in the menu under File to see if files can be exported to an excel format.

Chris - I struggled to get KSpread to write Excel files when I first started using Linux, I did not succeed
. I just use OpenOffice.org now

I also found if you export or saveas from KSpread 'OASIS OpenDocument SpreadSheet' OpenOffice will open the saved spreadsheet - which you can then saveas a Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP (.xls) file. Not sure how much functionality is lost in the process but at least it gets you out of a hole.

Cheers Jonathan, I'm having issues with openoffice working correctly with compiz-fusion so I've removed it.
What I can do is save as .odt and then upload to google docs and then save as .xls.
Not the best way to do things but it can be done.
