no sounds in pidgin

For some reason i can't get my sound to work in pidgin. I have alsa set up and I can listen to music, hear sounds in other apps, etc., but i can't get the pidgin sounds to work. I enabled sounds, enabled sounds when window has focus, enable sounds while away, etc. When i look at the bottom where it lets you pick sounds, the defaults were blank, so i manually entered them, still nothing. I opened the sounds files with xmms and they all play there. Anyone have ideas?
