Depending on the amount of RAM you have, you may be able to run more than you think. I've got Fedora 8 running on a P3 right now, very few issues. Runs faster now than it did with Windows XP, in fact.

Puppy is a good choice and the developers stay on top of it. I was very impressed with it the last time I tried it. It's not really a "small" distro, but DeLi Linux might be something to consider as well...

VectorLinux is also small I think.
However, as someone says above, you might be able to run a more complete distro provided that you have enough ram. A p3 is not a bad machine for linux, of course it all depends on the programs that you use and the eye candy that you want to throw in.
