It doesn't recognize regular CD's when I place them in the drive. Any thoughts on this one?

Do any other players work with the CD Drive? How about regular data CD's?

Hi MikeTbob,
Yep all data CD's & DVD's work great! That's what's kinda puzzling.
Thanks!

Do you have mp3 support, that is what you are trying to play right?
A lot of distro's choose not to include mp3 support for legal reasons, but they usually make it available through third party repos. Which distro are you using?I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.

I can play mp3's fine, I can't play regular CD format. Like a music CD
Sorry, I didn't specify the distro - kubuntu
Any "data" disc I can use just fine.

The only thing I can think of is that you are missing .wav support, what happens when you try to play an audio cd? Any error messages? If you do not have it installed already, check in your package manager for win32 codecs, or w32-codecs, something like that and install it.

Hi, when I place disc in the drive, it spins some & then stops. Acting like it's reading it. Then it gives no msgs. It acts as if I put no disc in the drive.

Is this CD/DVD drive fixing to die? Is it old or new?

The CD/DVD-RW is practically brand new...The whole laptop is. I dual boot & Vista uses it just fine. The laptop is less than a year old, in fact its probably less than 8 months old
