FireFox3 - Terrible performance
Okay, I've been putting off the issue of looking at FireFox3's performance on my Linux setup for a long time, but it's really starting to annoy me.
For some reason, it just performs very poorly on my system. On all of my other system it's fine.
On this box however, it often crashes when trying to pen JavaScript, takes many seconds longer to render simple HTML, and probably my most unfavorable event is that when using the file browser to search for a file, it opens my home directory by default, but cannot process the amount of files and etiher 1) Takes two minutes to finish processing and gives me a file list or 2) Freezes if I attempt to cancel or switch to a different folder immediately.
I've tried compiling, though I couldn't find the source code at all. I've tried using SwiftFox instead, but it pretty much has the same issues. All of this even happens on default with no add-ons.
I've tried to mitigate the problem with the home directory by clearing up cruft and organizing better, putting frequently accessed files in their own directory in the root tree, but I really don't like to have to do that.
Does anyone know how I can figure out what the problem is with it, and maybe how to fix it? I've thought about running it through strace, but that would be such a massive amount of data, and I wouldn't really know how to analyze most of it.

Well, the system it's having the problems on is an AMD Phenom X4, running a 2.6.29 kernel and Kubuntu 8.04, with 2 GB of RAM.
The system that's having no problem is an Intel Pentium 4, running a 2.6.24 kernel and Kubuntu 7.04, with 256 MB of RAM.
So clearly you can see why I forgot to bring up the specs. :P

Is the AMD system running x86_64 (64-bit) Kubuntu? If so, are you running 64-bit or 32-bit Firefox?
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Both firefox and my kernel are i686, so 32 bit ( right? )

That should be correct. Anyway, there can be any number of reasons why firefox is running poorly on the AMD system, including network configuration (slow or non-responding DNS servers, enet port configuration, tcp/ip configuration, faulty network switch, faulty NIC), piggish background processes, etc, etc. Clients pay me $200USD / hour for analysis of performance issues on their systems, after they have given up banging their heads against the wall, so it is not necessarily something simple, or at least the determination of the root cause is not necessarily simple. More, and complete, system information as to configuration, running processes and workload, hardware (system and network), etc. are required in order to eliminate at least the more likely culprits. Well, as I said, it's really an issue with it actually rendering the HTML and the stability of the program, not really the performance of the web browsing, so I don't think anything network related will have anything to do with it. Originally Posted by Rubberman
As far as system load goes, this happens from idle, to moderate, to extreme use. The only real peculiar thing about my system is that I run two x screens, but when I turn those off, it still has the same behavior. Even when using vesa and the free nv driver in Xorg, thinking maybe it could be the nvidia drivers, it still does it.

Sorry, my brain is only 1/2 functional today - up too late watching movies!
I missed the part before about the problem being more in the rendering and stability vs. speed/performance. I was reading too much into the thread title "Terrible Performance" I guess.
Anyway, do you have similar problems with any applications other than Firefox? If so, what are they? If not, then it is possible that an add-on or plug-in is causing the problem. You can selectively disable them (without removing them) to see if that helps.Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Also, FWIW, the vesa drivers really blow as far as video performance is concerned. I am running the x86_64 177.82 driver on my dual-display 8800GT system and have basically zero problems, and great performance, video-wise. There are video rendering glitches in the newer drivers; however, they are display and not performance problems. You get pixelated flashes when running full-motion video. The 177.82 driver is the latest without that problem. I keep trying the newer ones when they come out, but the bug is still there. nVidia is aware of the problem - the bug has been posted, but it is still there, at least as of the latest driver from about 2 weeks ago.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Yeah, I'm using the nvidia ones, but I tried going between different video drivers to see if that made a difference. I mean, I really tried a lot of whacky stuff.
Already tried disbaling all of my add-ons and everything. I even made an entirely new profile to see if that was the problem, but the behavior persist.
