Is there a way to use a folder instead of an image in QEMU?

I was wondering if it is possible to use a folder or mounted hard disk instead of the traditional QEMU images as a QEMU Hard Drive.

Or you use network filesystems like NFS, SMB (Samba), FTP, etc.
