    Hello, digitalx

    Did you check service status?
ps -ef | grep snmp ?

    thanks for the reply

I think the problem deals with starting the snmpd service on fedora 8. When fedora was first installed the snmpd service was not present. After installing the snmp package I was able to enable it via the services manager. But it was not running since I typed the ‘service snmpd start’ command and there was no response.

If you got no response then it's probably working, only when it gets an error, will you get a response.

EDIT: what happens when you do service snmpd restart

Chkconfig is a basic system utility to update and query runlevel information for system services.
You would need is something like
    chkconfig --levels 35 snmp on

or, if you set up the files
    chkconfig --add snmpd

    for install and
    chkconfig --del snmpd

    for uninstall.
