    Its usually a few days after release. You can also download them from here if you can't wait for them to appear in the repos.

    Is Pidgin 2.5.7-1 the same as 2.5.7?

    Yes. The -1 most likely indicates the package (not application) version. For a variety of reasons a distribution may change one of their packages, maybe to add a security patch or whatnot, and that last number usually indicates which build version of the package it is.
