Mac OS emulator for Linux?
Hello..
Is there possibly any emulation of Mac OS in linux?
I have one great game, Star Control III (original) which i used to play when i was on Mac about three years ago and i loved it and i still love it, it's simply amazing..
Anyway, i tried to find an emulator for windows, but never got it..now, i am thinking that maybe linux as so much more open system would probably have to have such solution?
I'd be happy to be able to play this game at weekends and when i have time... as i said, it's amazing..
Thanks
Daniel

I've played with Mac emulators in the past, and I don't know if this is still the case, but back then you needed a copy of the Mac ROM file to be able to run the emulators. As anyone familiar with old console games can tell you, the legality of obtaining ROM files from anything is kind of gray (if not completely black). I'll happily be proven wrong, however. I've still got a copy of Quest For Glory V in my closet somewhere...

Well, i still have a Macintosh SE FDHD from 1989 from which i once extracted ROM and succesfully emulated Mac OS around 6.x.x on windows, but it's no use as this system is too old for anything.
This game however, Star Control III, is from 1997th and was running on Mac OS 7.5 so i'd like to emulate something around that, Mac OS 7.x - 8.x. I am not sure it would work on OS X.
And for it being illegal, why, if i use it personally.. anyone can shed some light on that matter?
If it turns out to be legally allowed, does anyone has a ROM from Power Macintosh 7300 or similar? And how can i emulate it using that? Where's the software?
Thanks
Daniel

Well, now that I look at your profile, I'm not sure copyright laws apply in Croatia. At least, not the ones we have here in the US. *I* can't help you, since even personal use is restricted by our wonderful DMCA.. (don't get me started)... Good luck!

Well, they do apply automatically as everywhere, only it is probably somewhat different with DMCA and all that "evil stuff"
Anyway, i'll see, maybe there is a clone better than the ones i found for windows so when i have time for it i'll search.
Can anyone recommend a good space strategy game where you can interact with aliens, preferably a space counquering or freelancing space game that runs nicely on linux (i have mdk10).
Thanks

There are three main emulators:
Basilisk II can handle m68k mac emulation. It can not run PowerPC binaries, and supports MacOS 7.0 -> 8.5 IIRC. It has a just-in-time recompiler and is quite zippy. Basilisk requires a ROM image, but ROMs for m68k macs are easy to find. Of course, legally you must own the mac anyway.
SheepShaver is a PPC emulator mostly for old-world PCI macs, and handles MacOS 7 and 8, including PowerPC binaries. Like Basilisk (which it shares a lot of code with) it has a JIT recompiler. SheepShaver requires a ROM image, and ROM images for old-world PCI PowerPC macs are (almost?) impossible to find. Legally you must own the mac anyway.
PearPC is an emulator for New World Open Firmware based macs and supports MacOS X, but not MacOS 9 or MacOS/X's "Classic" mode. It also now has a JIT recompiler, but I don't know how well it performs. I don't know what the ROM and licensing situation is with PearPC.
As for Star Control III - it was originally a Windows game IIRC. Personally, I think if you want a good game, get Star Control II instead. It was _fantastic_ - IMO StarCon3 pales in comparison, especially for the story game. StarCon3 was a bit prettier I guess, though I hated the isometric mode.
As an even better treat, check this out:

Whoops, I should have mentioned the OS side of things too.
MacOS 7.5 is a free download. It'll definitely work with Basilisk and might with SheepShaver but won't with PearPC.
MacOS 8.6 will definitely work with SheepShaver but won't with Basilisk, and is not free. Five bucks should get you a CD off eBay or a local mac user.
MacOS X is very, very not free. We're talking more expensive than Windows, given its one year life cycle and lack of upgrade pricing. If I recall correctly its license also prohibits its use except on Mac hardware. I'm no expert, so do your own research, but that's my recollection.
