Openoffice 2.4 Spell checker not working

Using Debian Lenny
Openoffice.org2.4

The SpellChecker isn't working on OpenOffice.
In tools > options > language settings
> languages

I have it set to English Canada. I also tried changing to English US, but I still
couldn't get it to work.

I need some help to get this to work. How do I check to see if I have the right
dictionaries and the right settings in OpenOffice?

I installed myspell-en-us and myspell-en-gb.

I can spell check a new document, but I tried checking documents that I have
saved and it doesn't work. It skips over the mistakes.
