Hello, im running ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop and im trying to make a win xp vbox and when it gets to the part where is is creating the virtual hard drive (30GB in my case) it just stays at 0%. I left it running last night and went to bed, in the morning it was still at 0%. Now iv just tryd it again and its been sitting for about 2 hours now and still at 0%. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Do you have 30 GB of free HD space?
Do you have any other vbox vdi's which you have created?

I haven't used VBox on Ubuntu 9.10 (9.04 and CentOS 5.4 are what I use) and I haven't had any such problems creating virtual discs up to 80 GB in size. Kill the virtualbox process and boot to a rescue/live cd/dvd and run bad_blocks on your drive to be sure that there aren't any bad sectors on the disc. Marginal disc sectors can cause this sort of problem.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
