boot a live cd such as knoppix to check if it freezes also there.
Also, you could check your hardwareYou must always face the curtain with a bow.

Which Graphics Card do you have?
Execute this in Terminal
Post output here.Code:sudo lspci | grep -i vga
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
