MPlayer lags, unable to play properly
I have issues with using MPlayer, it lags and cannot properly play certain video files.
In particular files of this type "ISO Media, MPEG v4 system, version 1", with the extension "MKV", the files that are hard to play are around 2 GiB in size.
The system is a Core i7 at around 4.12 GHz, with 6 GiB RAM and a Nvidia GTX295 graphics card; the file is stored locally, not remotely on the network.
MPlayer even gives me the typical:

What distro are you using? What version of mplayer? What is your video card?
Give the contents of the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Try playing the file in very verbose mode and post the output.
Try different video out (-vo) options.Code:mplayer -vvv file.mkv

MPlayer - The Movie Player
You may want to try rebuilding mplayer with multithreaded support. (Or find a package if possible. Mplayer can be a pain to build.)

I am not a Mplayer user and can't help you but have you tried VLC Player? It supports most of media formats and have basic interface.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Try changing video out to vdpau.

That will list available video output devices. I'm not particularly familiar with Slackware, but I checked around a little and it looks like the mplayer for 12.2 might be too old.Code:mplayer -vo help
But I would still try different video out options and see if any improve playback. I think it's got to be something in your configuration somewhere. I'm able to play high def videos fine on much lesser hardware.
