    Okay, I am testing it (the dd command you gave me) in the virtual machine. It seems to be making an image. The image file is growing, but there is nothing telling me the progress of it, so how do I know when it's done?

    It depends upon the size of the disc, the speed of your CPU, etc. It can take an hour or so. Just let it run until you get the prompt back.
    Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
