    This is a good question and of course subjective depending on the individual. I would say either a program like notepad ++ where you can keep track of a list of "to do" items and highlight completed ones.....etc.

    But really a notepad and pen work the best!

    I like Iceowl. It's the Debian version of Mozilla's Sunbird.
