LXDE Missing Software
I'm new to Debian, starting with the bare minimum and apt-get everything.
Mind you, I've not used straight Debian in a long time but you might get things going by just doing as su:
apt-get update apt-get install synaptic
Make sure to edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file to include any repos that you're looking for.
Just for example adding this to your sources.list file:
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main
I think I have them as apt, not sure. I'll look into that..
