    Alsamixer: what levels to set for recording?

    I want to record some audio from my sound card using arecord. I would like to know what is the best levels to for alsamixer as far as the playback and capture levels: Master, Master Mono, Pcm, Capture.

    This isn't really a question that can be easily answered as it depends upon your audio hardware (board, microphone, speakers, etc) and then there is the personal subjective assessment. Experiment is the best I can suggest. You also might want to install a good recording tool that gives you better control over this stuff (sound levels, balance, mix, et al), such as Audacity.
    Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
