Help editing a .bin file in MuseScore

I have to edit a bin file in order to use the 'Save As' function in MuseScore. I have tried to do this in EMacs and was unable to do so because the file is read only. I tried to change the file permissions using the chmod command in the terminal and was unable to do so. I know there are ways around the file permissions but I don't really understand them past using the chmod command. Thanks!
