What kind of modem do you have? do you have an ethernet card with a modem atached, or do you have a usb modem, or do you have a PCcard?

Linux and usb modems are not a happy mix sadly, I know it is possible to get some to work, buy my experiences with linux haven't been the best.
Your AOL Broadband will work with linux, but you might have to get a ethernet router and an ethernet card for your computer to get it working, I know this works.
Maybe someone else can tell you how to set it up with usb?

what distro do you use?if you use suse it will be easy with yast.if the usb modem is not recognised try upgrading your kernel to the newest one(2.6.10) or find specific drivers from the vendor of the moden.i will agree with dylunio that linux+usb are not so good friends for time now.....
