Can't you password protect it through your desktop environment screensaver when you are away from it?

There is no way to fully protect a computer that another person has access to. They could simply boot a liveCD and use it to see what is on your computer. You could encrypt the data on your drives if you want to do your best to protect it, like with TrueCrypt for example:

Sounds like Lock Desktop in the logout
menu to me. I use it all the time. YMMV and it may say Lock Screen instead.

Locking it through your screensaver or with an applet in your logout menu are likely the best choices

Take the keyboard with you when you leave the room.
