Trying to get VLC to stream over Internet?

    Using Debian Squeeze

I am trying to find a audio/video player that I can use over the net: youtube and other sites. I tried using VLC:
media > open network stream. I entered the url and pressed play. VLC won't play anything and if I get the url wrong it crashes.
I installed the plugins for vlc from debian's website as well as w32codecs.

From the videos I watched this is what I learned and would like to know why it is not working.

    Thanks

Have you tried running VLC from terminal to get any hints from error messages?
