    This is one of those "its depends" type question. If doing systems programming then I would say C, no overhead of the OOP handler. For large app's that need to be maintained for long time then the OOP of C++ can an advantage. But with the speed of modern systems interpreted languages can be used and typically are easier to get people up to speed on.

    Open source applications are written in all manner of languages. Write it in Ada if that's your thing.
