Need help with installing in general (I've read the sticky)

Distribution: Mandrake 10.1

Well, I followed the instructions in the sticky and I was successful up until it came to typing in "tar - zxvf <filename>". In may case it was "tar - zxvf amsn-0_83.tar.gz" When I pressed enter, I got this message:

tar: You must specify one of the `-Acdtrux' options

.. So what do I do? This happens for anything I try to install. ( I tried mozilla aswell)

Remove the space between - and z
tar -xzvf or remove the "-" completely: tar xzvf

The "'s were just to show what I had typed . I removed the space though and I think it worked

edit again: Alright, so I got firefox opened now, how do I put it in Internet > Web Browsers ? or make a shortcut?

Also, I still can't open amsn yet. It made the msn folder for me, but I double-clicked amsn and nothing happened. From what I've heard, shouldn't it have opened?

About the firefox icon:
-right click on the little star button in the bottom left hand corner.
-select "menu editor"
-click on the "menus" tab
-click on the "edit K menu" button
-in the left window expand "internet" and highlight "web browsers"
-click on add application and find the file that starts firefox (the file name is "firefox")
-after you've done that click "save" at the top and that's it!

Don't worry about the whole noob thing, i'm a noob and I find the people on this forum to be very helpfull.
