With older hardware and 1GB of RAM, I'd go with a lighter distro and a lighter browser for sure. I run Lubuntu as my main distro as I like lean and mean even though I have newish fast hardware. One of the guru's here speaks very highly of Linux Lite as well...

I am now trying Bohdi and Linux lite live CDs. I've got 2 gb ram coming in the mail as well.

I think what triggered all this was running a watermark screenlet. Before that I've never been aware of my cpu load. FF and Chrome run ok, even Nexuiz, they just use every bit of cpu available.

Well I ran both Bohdi and Linux Lite live CDs, and both ran at 100% CPU as well. Neither ran any faster so I am staying with Mint on the desktop, however I did switch from Antix to Linux Lite on the lappy.

I decided to overclock the (desktop) CPU 10% for a total of 2199.966mhz. I decided if its going to use 100% I might as well give it more to use. seems to run faster too.

    Code:
    aaron@aaron-K8N ~ $ cat /var/log/kern.log | grep "MHz processor"
    Aug 26 13:38:56 aaron-K8N kernel: [ 0.000000] tsc: Detected 2060.149 MHz processor
    Aug 26 16:18:39 aaron-K8N kernel: [ 0.000000] tsc: Detected 2060.118 MHz processor
    Aug 26 16:39:23 aaron-K8N kernel: [ 0.000000] tsc: Detected 2059.996 MHz processor
