make install of R on CentOS7

Hi all, It looks like ./configure, make, make check and make info went through ok,

but when I go to make install it does not put an 'R' binary into one of the default locations so I cannot run it globally. Below is output.

    [rootATserver1 R-3.2.1]# make install
    mkdir -p -- /usr/local/lib64/R
    make[1]: Entering directory `/root/.nick/R-3.2.1/m4'
make[1]: Nothing to be done for `install'.
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/.nick/R-3.2.1/m4'
    make[1]: Entering directory `/root/.nick/R-3.2.1/tools'
make[1]: Nothing to be done for `install'.
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/.nick/R-3.2.1/tools'
    make[1]: Entering directory `/root/.nick/R-3.2.1/doc'
    installing doc ...
    mkdir -p -- /usr/local/lib64/R/doc
/usr/bin/install: cannot stat ‘NEWS.pdf’: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/install: cannot stat ‘NEWS.pdf’: No such file or directory
    make[1]: *** [install-sources2] Error 1
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/.nick/R-3.2.1/doc'
    make: *** [install] Error 1
    [rootATserver1 R-3.2.1]#

running bin/R from the directory does work fine.

make install-info goes through OK, (note: i do not need PDF manuals).

    [rootATserver1 R-3.2.1]# make install-info
    make[1]: Entering directory `/root/.nick/R-3.2.1/doc/manual'
    /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 "./dir" "/usr/local/share/info"

    updating '/usr/local/share/info/dir' ...
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/.nick/R-3.2.1/doc/manual'
    [rootATserver1 R-3.2.1]#

    relevant?

also, aren't there other ways to install R? from the repos, instead of compiling?

    thanks for replying.

The repos didn't have the current version, so source was needed.

I was able to work around the problem by putting something in doc/NEWS.pdf before doing make install
