Question Best photo manager for easy file sorting/retrieval?

I'm a longtime Mac user newly switched to Linux. My HP EliteBook 8570p came preloaded with 64-bit Linux Mint Rebecca. Before I transfer my photo library from the Mac to the HP, I'm trying to figure out what's the best way to make photos easy to sort and retrieve.

Is there a Linux photo management program which allows you to run a multi-variable search for photos--for instance, by a category tag (garden, visitors...) and also by a date range--so that only photos which match all entered criteria will be retrieved?

My computer came with GIMP Image Editor, gThumb, and ImageViewer. I'm not sure if any of these will do what I've just asked about, or if there are other programs compatible with my software which would do this, or if this is usually done with cloud-based not computer-based storage systems.

I'd also welcome advice for a relatively easy to use photo editor.

Thank you for taking time to read this and make suggestions.

    why don't you just try?
i think you will soon find out that
    a) gimp doesn't do that
    b) imageviewer is too simple
    - leaves gthumb.

also, use your package manager as a search engine!
putting "photo manager" into mine gives 7 results already...

    fwiw, i use geeqie.
