How did you install it (via packages or compiling from source)? Which linux distro are you running? Most importantly, what version of XMMS are you using? I'm guessing you are referring to RedHat >= 8 since they didn't ship it with XMMS or the mp3 codecs.

xmms should come with red hat 8 and up, it just doesn't come with the mp3 codec which is a very simple addition:

    the rpm file is here:

    http://shrike.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=523

make sure you get the i386 file and not the src.i386

Do you know what the reason for that was? Does it come with a vorbis decoder?

do your other sounds all work ok? like in 2d games and messengers and such?

have you tried streaming music through xmms using shoutcast.com for example?
have you tried playing music thru other players like mplayer or xine or something else?

i've heard of problems like this with xmms before, did you look at the site and check out the faq's?

have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling it?

nice to know the game still works! lol

run these commands in the terminal and post the output here:

    Code:
    /sbin/lspci
    and

    Code:
    /sbin/lsmod
also try running xmms and mplayer both in your terminal and post the error messages here
