hi, I have XMMS with the mp3 plug-in but everytime I start playing an MP3 the player playes less then a second of sound and then crashes!
can anyone help ...

How did you install it (via packages or compiling from source)? Which linux distro are you running? Most importantly, what version of XMMS are you using? I'm guessing you are referring to RedHat >= 8 since they didn't ship it with XMMS or the mp3 codecs.

i have red hat linux 8
I installed the software through synaptik (rpm's)
version 1.2.7

xmms should come with red hat 8 and up, it just doesn't come with the mp3 codec which is a very simple addition:

make sure you get the i386 file and not the src.i386

Do you know what the reason for that was? Does it come with a vorbis decoder?

yes I kow it comes with RH8 and I got the mp3 codec and the problem exists still...

do your other sounds all work ok? like in 2d games and messengers and such?
have you tried streaming music through xmms using shoutcast.com for example?
have you tried playing music thru other players like mplayer or xine or something else?
i've heard of problems like this with xmms before, did you look at the site and check out the faq's?
have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling it?

hi,
Ill try the reinstall thing when coming from work.
I have noticed that mplayer also crashes now...
seems to be something concerning my soundcard
Wolfenstein ET I think still works With sound...

run these commands in the terminal and post the output here:
andCode:/sbin/lspci
also try running xmms and mplayer both in your terminal and post the error messages hereCode:/sbin/lsmod
