i compiled mplayer from source and used checkinstall to generate a slackware package.
this is the output when i try to run gmplayer, verbatum

gmplayer crashes on loading skin

do you have this folder created?
because i had this trouble and just created this folder insered my new skin folders in it...
if ever you have still a permission trouble to acces it i can tell you to symlink the folder your talking about, to a created folder in your home account where you you should put them all
