Try that command as root in a terminal
su then root password

That is really weird, every distro I have tried, that is how I changed or set the password.
And I have tried quite a few.
Which distro is this?How to know if you are a geek.

What does running the command "which passwd" give you?

when i run the command for change root,user password
# passwd
Changing password for user root.
passwd: Module is unknown
# passwd ant
Changing password for user ant.
passwd: Module is unknown
and i also tried the option
# passwd -f ant
Changing password for user ant.
passwd: Module is unknown
