    Need help with RPM!!!!!

i just installed redhat 9 2 days ago and i'm having trouble with installing wine. i start up terminal, write my user name, press enter, and when it comes to the password, i cant type anything! whatever i press on the keyboard dont come up on the screen! so i simply press enter and it goes into my home's directory. i type:

    rpm -iv wine-20030813-1rh8winehq.i686.rpm

and press enter and i get this messege:

error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

It's not supposed to display anything while you're typing your password. That is so that noone else will be able to see it while you're typing it.

You need to be root to install RPM packages. So, either log in as root to install RPMs (not recommended), or run the command "su" to temporarily switch to root in order to install something. It will prompt for the root password.
