now how do i go about installing this?, the ubuntu guide wasn't much help.
It should be in Ubuntus package manager.
nope, it's not in the synaptic package manager
    http://www.sethkinast.com/ubuntu/hoa...4ubp1_i386.deb
I strongly suggest you stick to only the package manager but if you would still want to compile it yourself from source (what you have). You extract that .tar.bz2 file.. you then open the terminal and cd to that folder and as root do
    Code:
    # ./configure && make && make install
And it will install it for you.
    what's that link for?
Ubuntus packages are .deb files. You can use that file to install gDesklets.
    Code:
    # wget -c http://www.sethkinast.com/ubuntu/hoary/backports/gdesklets_0.35.1-1~5.04ubp1_i386.deb
    # sudo dpkg -i gdesklets_0.35.1-1~5.04ubp1_i386.deb

i read it, i got the hang of installing just .tar files, but then stuff gets hazy when trying the other ones, plus i don't know which of the two i need to install

Try the .deb package first. I'm going to say you have saved it in /home/john/foobar, chage that to where you have saved it. Open up a terminal and do
    Code:
    su
    [rootpass]
    apt-get install /home/john/foobar/gdesklets_0.35.1-1~5.04ubp1_i386.deb

since that failed, compile it using the tar.bz2, as you know howto with
    Code:
    tar xjvf gDesklets-0.35.1.tar.bz2
    cd gDesklets-0.35.1
    ./configure
    make
    su
    [rootpass]
    make install
