    Using MSN Messenger on Linux?



    I'm currently setting everything up to switch my laptop from Windows XP to Linux (I currently have Kanotix Linux, a deriviant of Knoppix). I'm looking for all sorts of applications to replace my current software. Is there any chat software with which I can log into the MSN Messenger network? It's just that all my chat buddies stay with Windows and MSN.

    You can use aMSN if you really want, but I recommend gaim as it works with ICQ, IRC, Yahoo, AIM, Jabber, and others as well

    There is also Kopete. As lakerdonald said, Gaim is probably the best.

    Thanks.

    I'm now looking at the download page of Gaim. There are a few versions listed: Fedora, Mandrake and Red Hat.

    I have Kanotix installed, which was developed out of Debian and Knoppix.

    Which version should I pick?

    I'll join the club and recommend GAIM. It's good but I'm still waiting for the next release after it's been a while since then. Hopefully it'll actually work with Direct Connect on AIM this time. But that's a side issue. Go with GAIM. It's the best thing out imo.

    i have installed externally yahoo messenger , it works....
    my linux version is red hat 9

    1. open gaim
    2. click on the "tools" drop down menu up top
    3. then click "accounts"...a window will pop up
    4. click the "add" button...another window will pop up
    5. under "protocol" select "yahoo"
    6. type your screenname and password...the alias is optional (just what somebody would see in their friends list AFAIK
    7. select "save" and select the checkbox next to your yahoo name under "online"

    that should work...it worked exactly like that for me. if it's anything else, state what you're having trouble with
