MSN changes its protocol frequently. It's best just to use a different protocol instead of getting screwed over every time they want to change it.

I use GAIM. Although, the only thing I use MSN Messenger for is chatting. I use IRC/proftpd for file transfer (way better than MSN's garbage method) and Ventrilo for voice communications. I do not know what you could use for the video feature.
