CAD programs

I found a list of CAD programs that are available for Linxu and was wondering if anyone had used any of them, and if what your thoughts were on the program if you had used any of them.

I used Qcad a long time ago (like 4 years). It was weaker than autocad, but what it did it did well. I would think the would have improved by then.

I downloaded JCad a while back and found it to be broken. Got it at least running with a crude hack (that's all I've got!) and plan to fiddle with it eventually. Thanks for a good link. This is an area that could really use some Linux development because AutoCad is getting as crazy as Microsoft with their ideas of subscription licensing, programmed obsolescense, intentional incompatibility and general bloat. I'd love to see a program that relates to AutoCad like OpenOffice.Org relates to Word/Excel/PowerPoint.

Have you ever used MicroStation? They just recently (the very newest release) can now read and write AutoCAD dwg files.

Unfortuneately, from what I've heard, it's more expensive than AutoCAD is, and can be a pain to learn. I had to learn it, because that's what the company I work for uses.

Thanks for the responses, I've been meaning to try a couple of them, but haven't had even had time to download the programs.

Have you ever used MicroStation?

Unfortunately, no. It was used in an office I worked in around 1989 and was wicked powerful, but I knew nothing about computers then and wasn't involved with it personally. I've looked several times on eBay for a package, but of the few available, I haven't found one cheap enough. Do you know if it would work in Linux? Back in '89, to exchange Microstation drawings with AutoCad required conversion either to .dxf or iges. I don't know if iges is still in use: it's not listed as a choice in Acad LT 2002.

Not to my knowledge. Can't guarantee that it wouldn't, though.

Now, using Microstation, it's not too hard to convert AutoCAD dwg files to Microstaion dgn files. It can all be done in Microstation, and will do a batch convert. Last I heard from some of the other people in my office, though, is that there are still some glitches with Microstation handling AutoCAD files.

Oh well. Maybe I'll have to make some time in the near future to try out a couple of the Linux CAD programs, and see how they compare to AutoCAD and Microstation.
