I often used AutoCAD although I really have no *need* for it, I'd like something comparable in Linux. What free CAD software do y'all recommend?...

There is no free 3D CAD programs for Linux, QCad isn't a bad 2D CAD program. It was included with the retail version of SuSE 9.3, not sure if it's available on the downloaded version. I was also able to get it via synaptics in SimplyMepis

You might try QCad. It is not AutoCad but may do what you need.
The web page is www.ribbonsoft.com

I have the retail version of SuSE, but i searched "qcad" in YaST, with no results.
Anywas, I am/was still using R12 of AutoCAd, so I never had 3D. So, I'll download and give it a whirl!

It's available on my SuSE 9.3 DVD, it was available in 9.2 as well.
Look under YaST, Install/Remove Software, Package Groups, Productivity, Graphics.

That is strange as I installed Qcad during the installation of SuSE.

Qcad is on my Knoppix Live CD. For more, search these forums because this question has come up a couple of times. For 3-d that looks like it might be cool if I can ever figure it out is Cycas. Free for non-commercial use.

Try following that link, and do a search on AutoCAD.
I've never used any of the Linux CAD programs, but it at least gives you 15 programs.

If you really fee adventurous try to get this thing working. http://www.opencascade.org/ I tried to figure out how to get this thing to work, but I don't have the patience. Looks to be a great program though.
