CAD
I'm planning on getting a copy of Linux for my newly opened business (paying half of my money to MS for a software package that won't give me much enough isn't exactly what I think good for a new business
), but my job (I'm an engineer, obviously) requires me to have a CAD program. Which is the best free program for this ? I've already heard about Win programs being able to run under Linux, so is there any chance of getting AutoCAD to work ? If yes, how can I do that ?

Are you sure that there isn't already a Linux (or UNIX) version of AutoCAD? I think there should be.
Anyway, I was able to find LinuxCAD, which unfortunately isn't free, though. If you want to check it out, see http://www.linuxcad.com/.
For free software, you can look at GNU's CAD directory, at http://www.gnu.org/directory/design/cad/. I don't know how complete those projects are, however. (I guess you're free to help, though... =) )

varkon looked interesting when I tested it (I don't know a whole lot about cad, but I did architecture drawings in school). I wonder if they make Catia for linux also? If they do it is commercial and really expensive, but worth it. From what I have seen Catia for windows is one of the best CAD programs.

AutoCAD for Linux ? Does anybody have more info on this ? I searched a big Google about that, but didn't gave me much.....Thanks for replying !

Nah, I'm just guessing that there should be. I really don't know _that_ much about CAD, but I've gotten the idea that AutoDesk is a large company with old UNIX heritage, and in that case they should have made a Linux version. I may very well be wrong, though.

AutoCAD: nope. Nothing free at all. You can't even buy it I don't think. If you can buy it it is prohibitively expensive.

CAD on Linux
Hi linuxengineer,
I am also an engineer (now working in IT) and am interested in CAD pakages on Linux as well. I haven't got around to reaserching this a great deal yet, but I have a few suggestions.
If your're lookking for 2D drafting only, try QCAD at http://www.qcad.org/index.php3 it's recomended by some.
For 3D look at VariCAD at http://www.varicad.com this is meant to be one of the better ones on Linux.

By the way there was talk of PROEngineer being ported to Linux, but I'm not sure what became of it all.
