    Mplayer "Error opening/initializing the selected video_out(-vo) device"

    I get the following message when trying to play a movie (.avi/.mpeg)

    "Error opening/initializing the selected video_out(-vo) device"

    -vo option with xv or x11

    i had the same problem, but to fix it i had to to edit the mplayer/gui.conf file. And didn't worked with either vx or xll. Worked on gl, gl2 tho.
    so, what i did was type the command:

    gedit .mplayer/gui.conf

    and set it as:

    vo_driver = "gl2"
