Depends on what you are looking for. Gaim is probably your best bet if you want Yahoo!, MSN, AIM, ICQ all in one client. then if you are looking for an IRC client then there is KVirc, Xchat, *****X as well as epic. but most will tell you to go with either Xchat or *****X. The difference between those two being Xchat is graphical interface, and *****X is all text based. but check out these sites if you want.

and maybe even http://www.freshmeat.net

I would also suggest a http://kopete.kde.org
For an msn only try Alvaro's Messanger, amsn on sourceforge
There's a new version of gaim out, .66, and it's nice. Gaim is definitely my favorite chatting client.
actually .67 is even out. and i think it rules but then again i was using .56 or something like that and i love the new one better. comes with every plug-in already loaded or else they are now built in which is nice. one less stepyou have to go thru to get up and running :D
bah, I meant to say .67 >_< I really like all the new features they added. Like setting idle time and being able to talk while away...
