burning movie dvds

This may have already been covered somewhere else but I have not been able to find it.

I was wondering how to burn movie files (mainly avi) to DVD so that they actually play as a movie rather than copying as a data file.

I use k3b to burn dvds but this cannot handle this without already changing the format.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you talking about encrypted dvd's? e.g. a film you saw in the cinema 6 months ago?

or are you talking about dvd's you have made by burning avi files to dvd?

Cheers debian, looks like will have to convert to mpeg tho.
Am just talking about ordinary avi files not any copyrighted stuff. Just want to be able to play them on a dvd player.
