I am using Debian Linux but I was thinking about setting up a dual boot with Debian and Ubuntu. If I do this, will I have to install my user applications twice for each distribution, or can I install them only once so that both distributions can use them? If I can install them only once for both distributions, how would I set it up so both Debian and Ubuntu can use them? Thanks.

Your best bet, in my opinion, would be to put Debian and Ubuntu each on their own partitions and keep them separate because some of the packages are different between these distros, and they each have their own repositories. I think mixing packages would be a disaster at some point down the road.
You could share a common /home partition between them if you log in using a different username for each distro.
