I have redhat 9 on a toshiba satellite laptop...i installed xmms and mplayer.
when i use xmms and play a mp3 file i dont hear any sound at all...is my sound card configured?
and when i try to use gmplayer i get a screen with just blue color or something...there are no icons or no buttons that i can see.
how does one run mplayer from the command line?
any help is appreciated.
do u have the mp3 codecs set up? redhat doesnt ship with them.
that blue gmplayer screen can u right click it and press normal view size.?
i guess so...i installed the following package:
mplayer-codecs-extralite-1.0-1.i386.rpm
i guess xmms plays the file but i dont hear the sound...do i need to

The blue mplayer screen is probably an indication that Xvideo isn't working as it should. What video card driver are you using, and what chipset does the laptop have. Can you check so that "xvinfo" returns a sensible result, and not an error or the like?
The most basic command line mplayer usage is as simple as "mplayer /path/to/file".
As for the sound, can I expect you to have checked the mixer levels? If so, run "ps aux >/dev/dsp" and see if that gets you any sound.
is there any way or command by which i can find out the video card driver info and the chipset info? whats "xvinfo"?
Check the Device section of your /etc/X11/XF86Config.
xvinfo is a program that dumps information about the Xvideo extension.
ok...the Device section in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file has:

ps aux > /dev/dsp makes some kind of noise....
also mplayer <name of file> does play the file but at a very low noise...i almost cant hear
it at all....gmplayer still gives me the blue screen....also i pasted the copy of the wrong XF86config file earlier...below is the correct section....
any idea why i get the sound at such a low sound??

Are you really sure that your mixer levels are upped?
Does the command-line mplayer work?
yeah, since u got some sound i would guess some of the volumes arent turned up. u need both master and pcm turned up.
also, what kind of soudn card is it.
