Viewing pictures in text-mode

when in text-mode i use ELinks to surf the web, and i think that one of the features is also displaying website png's and jpg's when asked to.
when i locate a picture i want to see, i hit enter and a dialog box opens saying something like this:

open with:

gthumb %

i dont want to use gthumb to see the picture because x must be running, so isn't there anny other app that can render picture while in tui?

I know you can use aalib with mplayer to display in text, but I'm not sure if that still requires an X server. The command is usually

strange that it should be avisynth to fail, i have never got fc5 to play avi's at all.
any idea?

I won't be home for a day or two, I'll check it when I get back. Unless someone else picks this up before then...

Feh might do what you are looking for. It is a commandline driven image viewer.

I also use elinks, but you may also want to keep on hand links2, if you have libpng you can compile it with graphics support, and then to use graphics mode is just links -g url, perhaps this will make life a bit easier.
