If you are logging in from the CLI, try the following as a normal user
If using GDM, select GNOME as the session for the normal user.Code:$echo "exec gnome-session" >> ~/.xinitrc $startx

I had already uncomment "exec gnome-session" and still regular user could not start gnome with startx. Now I use gdm to login as a user without problems
PS: I cannot login with gdm as root
- 01-23-2008 #4I suspect you could run gdmsetup and enable root logins but I personally don't see any need for it since you can do admin tasks as root via your normal user account.PS: I cannot login with gdm as root

I had this same problem. It seemed to be a problem with gnome, not Xorg. I had to reinstall, but I'm sure that there is a way to fix it. I'm interested in the answer.
