Then you can start a gnome session (after you do what jonathan183 say's )
By startx and if you want it on a different ctrl+alt+f7 for the gui you can
startx -- :1 ,2,3,4,...etc
or use xinit and create your own .initrc which executes the gui program , windows manager , or desktop manager you want.
Also you can try adduser at the console to create a user that you can log into
Or look into the /etc file and change the setting that does not allow you to login to the gui as root.
