Installing Arch

i just got done with my install of arch, and have done the following:

pacman -Sy fluxbox

pacman -Sy gdm

pacman -Sy gnome



but i still cant boot into GDM, or fluxbox

when i do "fluxbox" in the script it says cannot connect with XServer reverting back to level "C"

What says the X log file? Does it shows any errors?

And what is your video card model? Did you install the driver for it? And how?

I am running the "nv" driver. when i do startx it says
"no screens found.
Fatal error blah blah blah (sorry its really hard to list it all because i cant copy and paste it)"

i did xorgconfig, set everything up just like my other distros, but for somereason, it still wont launch it.

You might need to try the vesa driver if nv won't work.

here is what it outputs when i do "X"

(EE) unable to load module "nv"
(EE) driver does not exist


Ive tried vesa, but that doesnt work either, i guess ill have to try to reinstall the nvidia drivers again.

Installing the NVIDIA drivers again won't change anything, because you specified the "nv" driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. You must choose "nvidia" instead.

If you want to use the free driver, then install the package "xserver-xorg-video-nv".

ohh, i thought the nv driver was the unaccelerated driver of the nvidia and came with it. entirely my mistake. ill try it in the morning and thank you for all your help so far. i never met a better bunch of people.

what is the command for exiting&saving in vim?

"pacman -Sy xserver-xorg-video-nv" doesnt work, so i tried switching to nvidia, but couldnt find it in xorgconfig, so i decided to try and run vim to change it and save it. but after i change it, i cant find the command to exit and save it. when i use the one they tell me to use, my computer just beeps.

You have to be root to edit and save the xorg.conf file, and the write/quit command is:

:wq
