What kind of programs are there, similar to Bridge cs3 or lightbox, for viewing images?

There are many. I don't actually know the ones you mentioned, but every distro comes with them.

KDE desktops feature "kuickshow", which comes with filesystem selector, and also deals with drag 'n drop. It seems to be able to handle many formats, does not close completely when the currently displayed picture is deselected, can display batches of them, etc. its way faster and better than assigning JPG and others to be displayed by a browser.

Other distros offer "showphoto" this one is more obviously devoted to organizing and displaying a photo collection. There are several others in that role.

Image manipulation and creation, "The Gimp" is surely the most famous. Not actually for image display, but a tool to bend them where you will.

"Imagemagick" is a set of programs to manipulate various image formats
(JPEG, TIFF, PhotoCD, PBM, XPM, etc...).

Get into the package manager, use some search keywords like "image" and "photo" . You are bound to find them. Thats if you need to! Most folk discover at least one by simply clicking on a image file, or checking out the "graphics" section in the menus.

i don't like the gimp
i feel like a gimp using gimp
i would rather use the cs3 suite, it's like my second home (?)
