For 3D animation you might take a look at Blender for a start. It has a steep learning curve though so prepare for a lot of reading!

WoW, I never knew, that high quality animations can be done on Blender.

Hello, look for Dogwaffle (dogwafle ?), which is a TVpaint-like. It must be quite hard to find because this project has been stop, I think. But I had found a working version for Linux just a while ago.

Synfig is pretty good for 2d animation.

Main Page - Synfig Animation Studio

For 3d, Blender is the best of the best, in my opinion.
