Gimp Layers and masks

Here's what I got:

bottom layer - white background

many more layers : text - color increasing (or decreasing - how you look at it) from white to black on each layer - that is all of the text is the same color and with each consecutive layer it gets darker..

How can I add a layer mask to each layer to make the picture transparent in animation? Thanks for the help, Loy.
