Lightbulb Design Program List

Hello All,
I'm a web developer/designer interested in getting to know Linux better. Soon I will have a semi-used laptop dedicated towards this task.

Could I trouble you all to help me produce a beginner list of design/development programs that run on a Linux distribution? I'm not too worried about how they compare to PC or Mac programs. I just want to know that they are there, and I can toy with them in the coffee shop and make people wonder why.

Here is my starter list based on searches in this forum. I will keep it updated as the list grows. :

photograph/pixel image editing
Title | Link | cost
GIMP | http://www.gimp.org | $0
Pixel image editor | http://www.kanzelsberger.com | $32

illustration/vector image editing
Title | Link | cost
Sodipodi | http://www.sodipodi.com/ | $0
inkscape | http://www.inkscape.org | $0

animation - pixel/vector
Title | Link | cost
mvComicsMaker | http://mvcm.sourceforge.net | $0

video editing/formatting/importing
Title | Link | cost
Cinelerra | http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3 | $0
Avidmux | http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/ | $0

3D modeling/animation
Title | Link | cost
blender | http://www.blender.org | $0
flow | http://www.reptilelabour.com/software/flow | $0
K3D | http://k3d.klik.atekon.de/ | $0

web design/scripting
Title | Link | cost
quanta | http://quanta.kdewebdev.org | $0

audio/music composition
Title | Link | cost
Audacity | http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ | $0

Any major categories that I'm missing?
Thanks much for the help!

MediaInLinux is also a nice distrobution to look at because it's a live cd.

However, there are many other media based distros (especially sound (AGNULA comes to mind)) if you want to do a little bit of searching.

However, playing with the Live CD is handier because you can check out the programs without requiring an installation.

What about Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) for audio/music composition?

Maybe inkscape - a vector drawing program - is also interesting for you?

I'm now using Linux! After taking a cool distro quiz, I ended up trying Suse Linux 10. It was breezy to install, and included much starter graphics software. Now...I just need to learn...a lot.
