I'm trying to edit a picture of my cat in Gimp.

I would like to change the entire picture to black and white, but keep his eyes green.

Anyone know how to do this?

I don't do any of that kind of editing in Gimp so can't give any specific instructions, but here's the user manual:

What I ended up doing was opening the image twice, first as color second as black and white. Then I added a second layer to the bw image, and set that 2nd layer to rgb. Then I copied the eyes from the color image and pasted them on the 2nd layer of the second image. Worked great, got a sweet black and white picture of my cat where his eyes are still green.

There's an even easier way to do this, if you're curious.

What you can do is ...
1. Open your original image (obviously, haha
2. Duplicate the base layer.
3. Desaturate the duplicated layer. I'm not wholly sure where the desaturate option is in The GIMP, as I'm using Gimpshop; in Gimpshop, it can be found under "Image --> Adjustments --> Desaturate." It may be somewhere else in The GIMP; poke around until you find either "desaturate" or "Hue/Saturation."
4. Erase the part where you want colour -- the base layer is still in colour, and will show through.

Ta-da!

The easy way is to use ImageMagick, which is a really neat program for quick image editing--it does much of it at the command line.

Take the image, say, cat.jpg

covert -monochrome cat.jpg catbw.jpg

Presto, you have a black and white photo.
